Uncovering the ‘Stories from the inside’ of RFDS QLD
Yvette Jenkins has been a nurse for more than 30 years, with 13 of those up in the sky as a Flight Nurse for the Royal Flying Doctor Service (Queensland Section).
As one of 65 Flight Nurses in Queensland, Yvette will be supported as part of QSuper’s long-term partnership. This will fund the Flight Nurses’ ongoing training to maintain the skills required to save lives throughout Queensland.
Yvette was working as a nurse on Thursday Island in 2007 when she decided she wanted to take to the skies. It was the drone of the Royal Flying Doctor Service plane that made her look upwards, and changed her life forever.
Originally a Bundaberg girl, Yvette returned to her hometown to begin training for her new role with the RFDS, with a focus on emergency and life support courses for adults, children, and newborns.
Her experience and RFDS training has been put to use throughout her 13 years, as Yvette has faced a number of challenging scenarios.
Yvette recently shared a story about a retrieval with QWeekend’s Rory Gibson. On a chilly winter’s night Yvette and her crew picked up two patients to take them to Brisbane, which included a pregnant woman from Hervey Bay.
The woman was 28 weeks pregnant and having experienced some bleeding, she was being transported to Brisbane out of precaution. Unexpectedly, however, the woman went into labour mid-flight.
Discover what happened next in ‘Stories from the inside’ a series QSuper is presenting in partnership with News Corp.
The story emphasises the essential training flight nurses need to prepare for the unexpected.
That’s why QSuper’s support of RFDS (Queensland Section) is so important. We’re with them for the long haul.
