This year's QSuper Cardiac Challenge has raised over $255,000 to boost health services in Far North Queensland. Our support means 100% of this money will help communities in need.

Big hearts make a huge difference
Over 190 cyclists took on the annual Cairns to Cooktown ride from 20-22 September. Now in its 19th year, it's an epic 3-day journey through 333km of lush tropical landscapes.
The Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation (FNQHF) hosts the challenge each year. We've been proud sponsors since 2020.
This partnership makes sure every dollar raised helps cardiac patients in the far north's remote and regional communities. The funds go directly to equipment and local services – and donations are still rolling in.
New record for QSuper team
QSuper is part of Australian Retirement Trust (ART), one of Australia's biggest super funds.
For the past 3 years, our team members have jumped on their bikes and joined the ride as part of the Super QCrew.
ART General Manager of Commercial Relationships Patrick Twomey has just finished his second ride with the team.
'Our team raised over $17,500 this year – that's a record for us. And it was a true team effort, with our ART colleagues helping us every step of the way,' Patrick said.
The QSuper Cardiac Challenge uses the power of community to bring about healthier futures.
'This money means better health care for those in need, closer to their homes.
'Many of our members work in health care and emergency services. So, the funds also have a direct impact for them and their communities.
'We're proud to know that every dollar supports locals. It helps give them more confidence about their future.'
Community spirit shines through
While riders pedalled towards the finish line, volunteers and supporters worked day and night to keep everything running smoothly.
ART Regional Manager of Commercial Relationships Julie Bates knows what it takes to bring an event like this to life.
Based in Cairns, she helps during the event and runs one of the drinks stops to keep riders hydrated and happy.
Julie said the many hours spent handing out drinks, fruit and encouragement – then setting up tents and beds as the sun set – was truly rewarding.
'Every year, this event showcases our beautiful community spirit,' Julie said.
'The ride's about endurance and life-saving impact, but it's also about camaraderie.
'Everyone's there to help. I've even watched riders push other riders up the last hill. It's very humbling.'
Julie's a regular visitor at local health services with her role at ART. She saw plenty of familiar faces during the ride.
'The hospital foundation does a fantastic job and I'm looking forward to the ride's 20th anniversary in 2026,' she said.
Borrowing a bike for a good cause
ART Corporate Employer Communications Manager Kristy O’Rourke tackled her first Cardiac Challenge this year with the Super QCrew team.
Kristy admits she doesn’t own a bike. But she wanted to try something outside her comfort zone.
‘I’d never ridden more than 50km before,’ Kristy said.
‘I wanted a challenge that gave back in a meaningful way.’
As a busy mum, she found it tricky to fit in training.
‘But my crew’s amazing support and the wonderful vibe during the ride kept me going,’ she said.
‘After juggling training around work and family life, the sense of accomplishment at the end was huge. I’d encourage anyone to give it a go!’
How the money helps
In the past year alone, the QSuper Cardiac Challenge has helped fund:
- a dedicated outreach vehicle
- ultrasound carts for echocardiogram machines
- specialist cardiac ultrasound beds
- a new ECG machine.
The money raised also meant an estimated 3,000 people didn’t have to travel to Cairns for treatment.
Supporting members where they live
Sponsoring the challenge is just one of the ways we support our members in Far North Queensland.
‘We want our members to lead happy and healthy lives so they can enjoy their super when they retire,’ Kristy said.
‘As one of Australia’s largest super funds, we’re serious about our social responsibility. We believe in making a positive impact.’
