Queensland students, especially budding authors, are being offered a chance to win one of two writing workshops for their school by award-winning author, Sue Whiting.
Also being offered are eight $500 book vouchers, which are included in the prize pool offered in the QSuper Top 5 Book Challenge, which is part of the Premier’s Reading Challenge and open until 28 August.
Queensland students are urged to nominate their top 5 favourite books via the QSuper website to enter.
Supporting a love of reading
QSuper CEO Michael Pennisi said the love of reading and promotion of literacy were the driving force behind QSuper’s continuation of the challenge each year.
"Reading about characters going on wild adventures opens a window into the lives of others. This ability to empathise holds our children in good stead for their future," Mr Pennisi said.
Even in a world of technology, reading is the greatest educational skill. Not only does it provide entertainment and encourage creativity, it brings joy to millions of people.
"Our members teach and practice reading every day, their commitment empowers children for better educational outcomes and more prosperous careers."
"Through the challenge we want to support Queensland teachers in promoting great literacy skills and a love for reading widely," he said.
Books can be life companions
Sue Whiting, who will run the workshops for the winning schools, is the author of 19 children’s and young adult books, and many education and novelty books. Before becoming an author, she was a primary school teacher.
Ms Whiting said she wished for students to develop a love of books and think of them as companions for life.
Reading today gives children the best chance at being an award-winning author tomorrow," Ms Whiting said.
"What I love about the Top 5 Book Challenge is that it is open to all students — the avid readers, the beginning readers, the struggling readers. It fosters a love of reading for everyone at their own level and pace.
"It isn’t awarded to the best or fastest reader or writer; anyone can enter," she said.
Ms Whiting has had a number of Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Notable Books and her book, The Book of Chance, is shortlisted in the 2021 CBCA Book of the Year Awards.
