When can I access my super?

Preservation is super jargon for when you can access your super. Your super is generally 'preserved' until retirement after reaching your preservation age.

The Commonwealth Government is gradually increasing the preservation age from 55 to 60. This tool calculates your preservation age.

Notes:

The Commonwealth Government has prescribed the preservation age is 55 for a member born prior to 1/7/60, gradually increasing to age 60 for those born after 1/7/64. This calculator uses that information to calculate your preservation age. Commonwealth Government legislation does allow other limited circumstances where super can be accessed (such as in cases of severe financial hardship and compassionate grounds).

The Commonwealth Government announced transition to retirement measures to apply from 1 July 2005. These measures allow people who have reached their preservation age to access a portion of their super as a non-commutable pension even if they are still working. This is designed to help people transition to retirement as they can combine their super and part-time work to provide retirement income. Many super funds, including QSuper, are currently investigating how and when to offer transitioning arrangements.
